Ukulele Baby
So I was planning to introduce the ukulele to the little one when she was maybe two or three…
Today totally changed my plans.
We were at a friend’s house where they have PILES of instruments. This couple collects instruments… So the lady puts a cool, homemade simple drum in front of S. I watch her figure it out. Then, out comes a Dixie banjo (cast aluminum, open back, very cool!) and we played with that for a LONG time. Then, she pulls out a little old yard sale ukulele and gives it to S for Christmas! It’s not an expensive thing, but I was so surprised to see the baby take an instant interest in the instruments! She was fascinated – couldn’t quit playing with them!
So I spent the last hour learning about the uke. I have played guitar for a long time, but I haven’t tuned a uke or changed strings on one etc… and the bridge is pulling up a bit and needs a minor repair. (No worries, my husband can totally handle that).
I guess music is on the to-do list…
I am the happiest woman on the planet tonight.

I have a friend who plays the uke. So much more portable than the piano. LOL And cooler too. :P
Now you have to teach her some Rebecca Sugar. =D
The gift of music is wonderful.
When will you teach her to play the bagpipes? That instrument looks really cool and is spectacular for annoying people.
I’m smiling away at this post!
I’m sure she will be as musically inclined as her beautiful and talented mother. One day, the two of you can do a vlog together like my daughter and I did… My son needs to hurry and get home. I can imagine myself on piano, daughter singing or on the piano herself, while son plays his guitar…
ukelele features in a lot of conversations around our place lately. but my baby has finally settled on the piano. so yay.
: )
Awesome….
Lovely! Instruments and musical things are among Sophie’s favorite things. She also took an early interest. Isn’t life grand?
Yes.
@A_Different_Route - It’s the funnest!
@chronic_masticator - Never heard of her. I’ll check it out.
@mrcolorful - Ha! Soon as she’s big enough
@chamchikimbap - :D
@suzyQ_darnit - She just woke up and hugged the uke hehe
@armnatmom - I’m trying to find the time to figure out how to get some video… It really needs to be recorded!
@ordinarybutloud - S wasn’t interested much in any of the keyboards I’ve shown her. The uke was an instant hit though.
@Shahrazad1973 - What kind of instrument does Sophie like?
@oceanstarr - She writes the songs for Adventure Time. Might be a little dark for a baby, but my five-year-old loves her.
@chronic_masticator - I like to play classical and standards myself… Baby loves dubstep a whole bunch though. We do Sesame Street and dubstep a lot lol
That’s pretty damn sexy and lovely to hear. My voice has gotten worse over time due to misuse, but I am so happy that I appreciate music and can carry a tune because my mother practically bathed us in the stuff. Classical, old country, folk, rock – each of my mother’s children can’t live without music now. It’s good for the brain and the soul, and I’m glad S gets a taste of the real stuff.
@oceanstarr - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmUOJkt-lV8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jz6W34Or5gQ are just a couple of our favorites.
@BoureeMusique - You should see the way she cuddles her instrument. It’s magical
@oceanstarr – everything she can shake or thump. She is actually scared of the harmonica, but she pretty much loves all the little kid sized instruments we have for her. Can’t wait to introduce her to more!
